Multimeter Tutorial: How to Test LED

Step 1: Understanding the component

Light emitting diode (LED)is a small component used in almost every electronic device. Led has 2 terminals or legs. The bigger leg is the anode or positive terminal and shorter leg is cathode or negative terminal.

But this method of identifying the leads will not always work. Consider the case in which the legs of the LEDs are already cut into same lengthfor using in a circuit. Even in such cases the following method works.

Just take a close look at the geometry of a standard 5mm LED.

The one side is rounded shape and the other side has been made a little straighter (right hand side drawing in the image). The leg in the straight side is always negative and the leg in the rounded side is always positive.

Step 2: Digital Multimeter

Set the digital multimeter on the continuity mode. If you touch the testing leads to each other the multimeter will give a continuous beep sound. The beep sound means that the multimeter is working perfectly.

How to Test an LED using Multimeter

In the above multimeter, the knob is turned to the continuity mode which is at 400 ohm section. Testing leads should be plugged into the multimeter as shown in the above image.

Step 3:LED Connections

Crocodile teeth testing lead is added as an extension to the original leads of the multimeter.

Crocodile probes are connected to the LED terminal according to their polarity. Longer leg is connected to the positive supply and shorter to negative (grounded).

Step 4:Checking the continuity

{C}a) {C}Power ON the multimeter

{C}b) {C}Set the knob on the continuity mode.

{C}c) {C}LED will glow indicating that it is in working condition

{C}d) {C}If the LED doesn’t glows then check the connections else the LED is faulty.

Delete An "undeletable" File

Open a Command Prompt window and leave it open.
Close all open programs.
Click Start, Run and enter TASKMGR.EXE
Go to the Processes tab and End Process on Explorer.exe.
Leave Task Manager open.
Go back to the Command Prompt window and change to the directory the AVI (or other undeletable file) is located in.
At the command prompt type DEL <filename> where <filename> is the file you wish to delete.
Go back to Task Manager, click File, New Task and enter EXPLORER.EXE to restart the GUI shell.
Close Task Manager.
OR you can try this
Open Notepad.exe
Click File>Save As..>
locate the folder where ur undeletable file is
Choose 'All files' from the file type box
click once on the file u wanna delete so its name appears in the 'filename' box
put a " at the start and end of the filename
(the filename should have the extension of the undeletable file so it will overwrite it)
click save,
It should ask u to overwrite the existing file, choose yes and u can delete it as normal
Here's a manual way of doing it. I'll take this off once you put into your first post zain.
1. Start
2. Run
3. Type: command
4. To move into a directory type: cd c:\*** (The stars stand for your folder)
5. If you cannot access the folder because it has spaces for example Program Files or Kazaa Lite folder you have to do the following. instead of typing in the full folder name only take the first 6 letters then put a ~ and then 1 without spaces. Example: cd c:\progra~1\kazaal~1
6. Once your in the folder the non-deletable file it in type in dir - a list will come up with everything inside.
7. Now to delete the file type in del ***.bmp, txt, jpg, avi, etc... And if the file name has spaces you would use the special 1st 6 letters followed by a ~ and a 1 rule. Example: if your file name was bad file.bmp you would type once in the specific folder thorugh command, del badfil~1.bmp and your file should be gone. Make sure to type in the correct extension.

Multimeter Tutorial: How to Test a Transistor

This tutorial will detail with testing PNP and NPN configured transistors using a multimeter. After reading this, you will be able to find out configuration of the device as well as find out its collector, emitter and base.
Transistor
 Step 1:Transistor Function on Multimeter.
Transistor Function on Multimeter
If the model number is not known, it is impossible to detail about the  type of transistor just by looking at it. To ease the process, multimeters come with a function where one can calculateHfe or small signal Forward Current Gain of a bipolar transistor.
Apart, from detailing with the forward gain value, the Hfe function solves two problems.
{C}1.      {C}Type of the transistor can be found.
{C}2.      {C}Collector, Base, Emitter terminals can also be known.
 Step 2:Checking Transistor
{C}        a)      {C}Testing an  NPN Transistor.
{C}·Place the three legs of the Transistor first in the E-B-C formation. The multimeter will show the reading if this formation is correct, else it will show over range.
Checking Transistor· If the previous method doesn’t work, place the three legs of the Transistor in the B-C-E formation. If multimeter shows reading then it’s correct. The reading is nothing but thr HFE of that transistor.
Transistor Forward Gain
{C}
        b)   Testing  PNP Transistor.
· Place the three legs of the transistor in the same manner as discussed above.
Transistor Terminals{C}· After placing the transistor in the correct formation, multimeter would show the Hfevalue of the transistor.

How Torrent works

Today Torrent are the most common word used across whenever there is a talk about downloading a movie, TV program series or any big file like software etc. A torrent file is nothing but a file that consists of the address and information about file of interest. So, what is torrent, how torrent became famous, how they increase the speed of downloading without affecting the bandwidth and how it is different from the traditional downloading. Let’s see,

Getting started with torrent:
1). Download the software: The foremost step taken by the user is to download and install a piece of software called as BitTorrent client who will track the torrent file’s related computers. We will discuss it afterwards, there is variety of software available for torrent tracking like utorrent, BitTorrent, BitComet clients etc.

2). Find the desired torrent file: Whichever type of file you desired to download, download it. To download a torrent file is very easy. Go to very famous websites like Bittorrent.com, torrentreactor.com or you can just make a search on search engines typing your desired file name followed by the word “torrent”. Remember, the torrent file is very small in size. It is not a data file but a file having tracking information of the data. Its extension is *.torrent.

3). Take the torrent into the torrent software: If you have successfully installed the software from the first step, you now have to just double click the torrent file and it will automatically open in the BitTorrent software.

How It Works?
Now, it’s time to see how the software is fetching the data. The torrent file works on the method of peer to peer sharing downloading method i.e. file is downloaded in different pieces according to their availability. To understand this downloading scheme, let’s go through the following steps:
1). The server consists of the data which a user wants to download. Let us assume that you want to download a movie.

2). The file is being present on the server and is being getting downloaded by different computers in different parts earth. As well as there are also computers which already have finished downloading the movie. Now as stated above, the different computers consists of different pieces of same file. Like a user in North America have completed downloaded first half an hour of the movie and another person in Srilanka have downloaded some middle part of the movie. Similarly single file from server is getting downloaded between different users in pieces. So, every user has some part of the file.

3). Now it’s your turn to download the file, the software you have installed will scan or track the computers that have pieces of the file or complete file and starts downloading from that computer’s hard drive. In simple language, the computer consisting of pieces of file acts as the server for your computer. The file is downloaded in pieces from different computers hence the bandwidth is greatly reduced.

4). The speed of download depends upon the number of computers that are ON and downloading the file. AND the computers that have finished the downloading should seed the data so that others can download it.

General Terms Used in Torrents:
There are different terms that are being used by the torrent and you will come across. They are being stated below:
Seed: Well, if you will go through downloading a torrent file from any website, you will come across the comments which state “Please Seed” or any similar sentence. Seed are the computers which have already finished downloading the whole file and seeding the data. Your computer is receiving files from them.
Peers: Peers are the computers which do not have the entire file but contains different parts of the file you are downloading.
Leeching: The user which does not seed but immediately disconnects after finishing the download and not allowing other users to download the file is called leeching. It decreases the speed of download.
Tracker: As you put the torrent file in the software, it asks to tracker to find the computers which are seeding or have small portion of the file (peers)

Swarm: Swarm is the term given to the set of all the computers that are detected or tracked by the tracker. The higher the number of computers in swarm more is the downloading speed.
Up Limit: The up-limit or upload limit is the limit at which computer is seeding or providing data to other computers which are downloading the same file. It is generally very low (in few kbps), this is for the account that many small uploads from different computers combine together to form a large file which is then shared to other computers.

Create Your Own Torrent:
To share large files with people or with friends on the net, you can create your own torrent file. It is very easy. The software used here is utorrent. You can download it from its official website. Go through the below steps.

Step 1: Open your utorrent software and go to File>Create new torrent.

Step 2: A window will pop-up as shown below. You are required to fill in some information. Go on reading next step.

Step 3: Choose the file or directory you want to share and do the settings as shown in below figure.

Step 4: Click select and save button at bottom and you are done. Next step is to send to people you want to send or you can upload it to any website for public usage.

Nokia is now officially owned by Microsoft

Nokia is now officially owned by Microsoft

We have been anticipating this moment with terror from a long time. But that doesn't make the pain a any less. But here is the hard truth: Nokia's gone now. It has become one of Microsoft's properties. Alas, the Microsoft-Nokia deal has been finalized. There is no other way to say it, this is the truth.

From now on, Microsoft is not only a software company, but a hardware one too. At the very least, Nokia's off the market for many years to come. Microsoft has for $7 Billion plus, purchased not just a smartphone company but an enigma in form of Nokia. The value is debatable, but what is tragic though is the void Nokia leaves behind - I don't think it will ever be filled. Sure, many new companies are coming up, but Nokia is Nokia.

Microsoft now controls 90 percent of the Windows Phone market. It has access to Nokia'sLumia and Asha range of smartphones and almost any other hardware Nokia produced. . The first thing it has done is change the name to Microsoft Mobiles. As far as Nokia is concerned, you might see its name on software like Here Maps, but that is about it.

Good for Microsoft. Well, not too good for ardent Nokia fans like me. Lets see how Microsoft gets the ball rolling now.

How SMS are sent from internet/ websites to mobile phones

Since the invention of the Internet, a new era of convergence of technologies has ushered, bringing close distant technologies which could not have been thought to be related at all. Sure, we can send a mail from our GPRS activated cellular device, but is the reverse true? Can we send a text message from the Internet? The answer is yes and we all have used free online SMS sending websites either on a regular basis or just for testing if it works or is merely faking. The best and the most attractive part is the word ‘free’ and sometimes, ‘unlimited’ too. But have you ever wondered how this is made possible? We're going to cruise along the path an online SMS would follow in the whole process in the next few pages.

The first and foremost requirement is a terminal with an internet browser and internet access. We visit any website offering free SMS service, saywww.xyz.com and register for a free account (Some websites allow sending SMS as guest users too). This would be sufficient on the end users part to get started. To send an online SMS, an interface is presented to the user which allows them to enter the destination mobile number and the Text Message. Usually, the service is offered on a national basis through an Aggregator Gateway adopting Local Termination model, i.e. we are allowed to send messages on numbers from the same country only, but a few premium sites may offer international messaging too.

The life of an online SMS commences in the network jungle the moment you click on the send button. And that is where the user can cross fingers and hope it reaches the intended recipient while waiting for a delivery report. The internet is a quagmire of various protocols which help us to navigate through the World Wide Web. One of the most common formats adopted is the HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol), which does an effective cross-linking and navigation of various nodes of the webspace. The message entered by the user may travel the web in various protocols like HTTP, HTTPS (HTTP + SSL encryption), XML over HTTP / HTTPS, SMTP (email to SMS), and FTP. A simple HTTP request can be like:

The block diagram of the message flow is shown above.

1. The website server makes an entry of all the SMS details in its database record before it injects the message into the network. This may include the IP address of the user, user details, the time of login, message sent, destination number, time of sending message etc.

2. For a message to be accepted as a valid SMS in the mobile networks, it must have a few necessary parameters. These are Header (this identifies the type of message to be sent), Service Centre Timestamp, phone number of the sender, protocol identifier, data coding scheme, length of the message and the message itself. The message is input to a SMS gateway which handles the necessary protocol conversion. This protocol conversion is necessary because the internet request coming from a web server is generally in the form of an http request(Hyper Text Transfer Protocol), while the mobile networks make use of the SS7 signalling protocols. Thus, an SMS gateway acts as a bridge between the two network formats. For illustration, the message sent above as an http request may look like this in the CIMD protocol after conversion:

A SMS Gateway can be an application API written in programming languages like C/C++, Java etc. implemented in the server backend, or it can be a readymade solution provided by the software companies in the form of SaaS (Software as a Service). Websites usually employ Direct-to-SMSC gateway type of gateways to achieve this kind of conversion. Such Gateways are directly connected to the Mobile Operators SMS Centers (SMSC) through internet or via leased lines. It is the SMS centers which store the messages sent by a user and deliver it to the intended recipient when they are available.

3. All the SMS transactions on the mobile network are handled by SMS Centers (SMSCs) which can work on various protocols. It is necessary to convert the requests into the suitable protocols for successful communication as they do not understand the internet protocols. For example, Nokia uses CIMD protocol, CMG uses EMI while many others use SNPP protocol.

After going through a succession of steps of internal processing, the local GMSC sends an appeal to the HLR (Home Location Register) and gets the information required to route the message to the receiver. This includes the network information of the recipient so that it can be sent to Main Switching Center of the respective provider via the home MSC. The GMSC is the window of any network to the rest of the mobile networks.

4. The target MSC checks the receiver information using the VLR (Visitor Location Register) and does the necessary authentication and validation. The HLR and VLR are databases that keep entries of all the registered users in their specified coverage areas. The SMS uses a store and forward service. The MSC of the recipient forwards the message to the mobile server unit and stores the message there until received by the recipient or the maximum storage time expires, whichever comes first. If successful, the text is put on the internal memory of the SIM card until it is deleted by the user.

5. The MSC of the recipient then provides a form of acknowledgement to the SMS centre which would be reported back to the original sender as a delivery report if such service has been provided by the website.

In this way, a website can be used to send SMS to a valid mobile number.

Elevator: Invention Stories

Invention Story of Elevator

Ever wondered what gave way to soaring imagination of architects? Would the modern day city’s skyline be the same if we did not have skyscrapers and high rise buildings? One of the inventions that have played an important role in modern day architecture is elevators. Imagine yourself climbing stairs to your apartment on 19th floor each time you want to go out. Yes, sounds like a good workout routine. Think again…and you would have a new found respect for elevators and its inventors.
The need for elevators did not arise just yet to support modern architecture; it has been as old as our civilization. We have always looked for ways to lift things. Back in 3rd century, hoists operated by water wheels, humans and animals were used for the lifting purposes. This basic way of lifting continued till the dawn of the industrial revolution. Animal or man power was the main force behind hoisting until one day Archimedes endowed us with an improved lifting device. The device was operated with support of pulleys and ropes coiled around winding drum using levers. By AD 80, wild animals as well as gladiators could ride this primitive elevator.
Further ahead, the first ever elevator was designed to lift a passenger in 1743. This was made exclusively for King Louis in France. Though this looked nothing like elevators of today, it was called a flying chair. Carefully placed outside King’s balcony, the flying chair was used by the king to travel from one floor to another. It was operated manually on King’s command.
Elevator
Soon in 1850, much more a sophisticated elevator was introduced – hydraulic and steam elevator.  And with this, a name that has been associated with quality elevators till date, Otis, came into being. In a span of two years, Elisha G Otis introduced first ever safety elevator. He solved the challenge of rope failure faced by earlier elevators and hence his elevator was known as safety elevator. Otis’s elevators had safety brake installed in each one of them. In case of a rope failure, spring pushed ratchet to bring forward sawtooth iron bar, securing the elevator. Otis demonstrated this himself in one of the presentations in New York by breaking free the rope and the safety brake that he had installed worked wonderfully.
Simultaneously, Frost and Stutt introduced a traction method, counterbalance kind elevator known as Teagle. Teagle and safety brakes by Otis became basic safety features of the elevators and made way for safety elevator devices.
This passenger elevator was first installed in New York City’s hotel Broadway in 1857. It was powered by steam, could carry around 450 Kgs. of weight and travelled at a speed of 12 meters/minute. Installation of this elevator gave boost to the hotel business because now rooms on the upper floors were no more undesirable. The hotel could now charge premium rates for the penthouses as they gave superior view and the customers were not required to climb so many stairs.
Four years later when Otis died in 1861, his sons took forward the legacy by forming Otis Brothers co. Since then there has been no stopping them – in 1873, around 2000 elevators were set up in hotels, offices and apartments. Five years later hydraulic elevators were introduced and just as era of skyscrapers arrived, Otis Brothers Co. introduced electric elevators.
Soon the company started growing by leaps and bounds, and the brothers decided to join hands with 14 other elevators companies to form a giant in elevators called Otis Company. With this merger, the company became even the more powerful and came up with a design that was considered to be the backbone of the industry. Gearless traction elevators has made Otis a part of world’s leading aerospace and building systems.
Hydraulic powered elevators started to be known as practical options when Edoux exhibited one of these at Paris. These elevators were used widely in United States and Europe by the year 1878. The top speed of these elevators was 150 meters/minute.
And in year 1880, when the world was adopting the electrical power, Siemens, a German company showcased an electric powered elevator. The rotation speed of this direct current motor was controlled using worm gears. The first ever DC motor was used in 1884 in USA. After some years, one of the Elisha’s sons - Norton Otis in year 1889 also developed an electric elevator. This was first elevator that was direct connected. This was installed in New York. This elevator could take load of around 675 Kgs with a speed of 30 meters/minute.
In 1889, the world of elevators also saw oil powered hydraulic elevator which was first installed in Paris Eiffel Tower. In 1990, alternating current motor was also introduced which further gave boost to use of electric motors. Three years later, the US market also witnessed traction current elevators. With this method, a car could be connected to counterweight using pulley and rope with support of the traction power. Since using this method, little electric power was required, lifting cars up to the high rise buildings became easy and feasible.
Soon thereafter, Ward-Leonard’s method added to evolution of elevator technology. Otis Company launched this technology to market as the multi-voltage systems and Westinghouse introduced it as variable voltage technology. Additionally, DC system that made use of car levelling tool lead to improved quality of landing as well ride on each of the floors.
In 1922, Westinghouse introduced gearless elevators in Chicago and in the same year launched fastest elevators that had automatic landing mechanism. This elevator boasted speed of 420 meters/minute.
In 1930s, elevator technology had been around for 75 years and architects could dream of skyscrapers as high as 100 stories and more. And this was the time when Mitsubishi also entered in the elevator business. The company built on the technology and gave the biggest breakthroughs in the elevator industry. From hoists to the elevators that are as fast as 1000 meters/minute and more, elevator industry has come a long way since its start.
Hopefully next time we climb an elevator, we would take a moment to thank the inventors of this flying machine.

Project: Home Applinces Control By Human Voice

We can control any home appliances by using our voice. The main aim of this project is to control light, fan, computer etc... by using human voice. The physically handicap people does not capable to operate home appliances by using their hands. They are not capable to on/off the switch by using their hands since This project is very useful for physically disabled/physically handicap person .They are capable to  operate home appliances by using their Voice. In this system we are using voice recognition module to recognize their voice.  When we speak one than first device will be on and remaining devices will be off. When we speak two than second device will be on and remaining devices off and so on.
Voice Controlled Home Appliances
In the normal switch board we have to push switch manually and oftenly stand up and operate switch manually so that it is wasted of time, It is also used to operate for handicap person, using a voice recognition application which is interfaced with electric device. The prototype of the Switchboard is built using a micro-controller, chosen for its  low cost, in addition to its versatility and performance in mathematical operations and communication with other electronic devices. The system has been designed and implemented in a cost effective way so that if our project is commercialized the needy users in developing countries will benefit from it
·        Technology used in our project:
Here we are using voice reorganization technology. So we are using HM 2007module to recognize the speech signal. This module is used to convert the voice signal into corresponding binary code that is given to the microcontroller, and the microcontroller gives the output according to the voice input.
Generally microcontroller generates codes in its output according to the input. So using this module we can control switch relay corresponding to the voice command.
·         Here there are five voice command is used for controlling the switch relay
1.      Switch1
2.      Switch2
3.      Switch3
4.      Switch4
5.      Switch5
6.      Switch6
